Revolutionary Cancer Treatment System Comes to Delaware County

When the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Bryn Mawr Hospital Health Center opens this summer, it will be the first medical facility in Delaware County to offer the Trilogy™ System, the world's first non-invasive, 3-D image-guided radiation therapy system. Trilogy delivers ultra-precise, high-dose radiation therapy to tumors as small as a pencil point, minimizing the damage to healthy tissue and reducing patient treatment time.

A product of Varian Medical Systems, Trilogy consists of a linear accelerator that rotates around the patient to deliver radiation treatment from virtually every angle; a built-in digital imaging system that can pinpoint in real-time the size and location of a patient's tumor by adjusting itself as the patient moves; and a respiratory gating component that synchronizes the radiation beam to the patient's breathing.

"This advanced technology helps physicians achieve very fine control over how and where radiation is administered, even when treating tumors that lie close to critical anatomy like the heart and spinal cord," said Richard Carella, MD, Division Chief, Radiation Oncology, Bryn Mawr Hospital. "The result for patients is faster, more effective treatment with minimal side-effects."

Opening this summer, the Bryn Mawr Hospital Health Center is a three-story 130,000 square foot medical office building, located at 3855 West Chester Pike on the Ellis Preserve in Newtown Square. In addition to the Cancer Center, the new Health Center will offer a variety of comprehensive services including cardiac rehab, cardiology, diabetes management, imaging, laboratory, physical rehabilitation, sleep medicine, and physician practices, including internal medicine, primary care, obstetrics and surgical specialists.
